Early intervention & Identification

Early Intervention has been recognised for several decades as means of improving the developmental constraints associated with disability. The developmental consequences of deafblindness indicate a need for early intervention which requires specialist intervention and coordinated services, involving families. Sense India and it’s partner organisations provide early interventions to young babies who have been identified with multi-sensory loss or are at-risk of delayed development. Sense India is striving to reaching out to more children with deafblindness and multiple disabilities through neo-natal hearing and vision screening in partnership with hospitals in various states and providing intervention to the identified children. The team with specialised skills are involved in early identification and intervention like Paediatrician, Special educator, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Audiologist, Speech Therapist and Parents.

Educational intervention

Education and inclusion of children with deafblindness and multiple disabilities is a long-term process and is not just limited to catering to their health care and daily needs. Education of people with deafblindness and multiple disabilities aims at enabling them to reach and maintain their optimal physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological and social functional levels. A multidisciplinary team approach for care and service is the basis of every rehabilitation plan. Sense India's approach of education of children with deafblidness and multiple disabitlies are based on their individual needs to build their capacity to become active and contributing member of their society

Income generation activity and vocational training

The process of economic independence starts with identification of right kind trade in which vocational training are provided to young adults with deafblindness. Families are natural partner in the process as they know what will work in the community. The vocational training approach includes training in independent living, communication training, soft skills training, money concept, etc. After attending the vocational training programme, adults with deafblindness are supported to set-up Income Generation Activities (IGA) IGAs consist of small businesses managed and run by adults with deafblindness and multiple disabilities with support/partnership of the family members and siblings. Sense International India identifies the interest of adults with deafblindness and matches with the skill sets and opportunities available in the community to support them with seed money to start the IGA.  Pre Vocational training aims to develop specific skills in the young adults with deafblindness to cater to their needs for independent living and an active contributing member of the society.

Inclusion

School intervention is a gateway to the inclusive environment for learning and mainstream in education and society. Academically functional concepts developed to achieve educational goals. Right to education provided the opportunity for free and compulsory education to children with deafblindness in mainstream school. It provides an environment for inclusive learning within the society. Where children with deafblindness follow the same curriculum with adaptation and specific teaching strategies
