A student with Deafblindness exploring musical instruments

Ganesh

From Quiet Corners to Confident Steps

In a small home in Navi Mumbai, Ganesh Kale spent his early years mostly within the same four walls. Born with multiple disabilities and identified at just 18 months old, his world was limited not by a lack of love, but by a lack of access. His father, a daily wage labourer, worked tirelessly to support the family, while his mother cared for him at home, doing everything she could with the resources they had. But specialised support felt far away.

Days passed quietly, with very little opportunity for structured learning, interaction, or play. Ganesh remained mostly disengaged, unable to communicate his needs or express himself, and dependent on others for even the simplest daily tasks.

Everything began to shift on 16th July 2023, when Ganesh enrolled in the Sparsh Project by Sense International India after his family was referred by other parents. It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but the beginning of a steady, patient journey. His abilities were first understood through detailed assessments—how he responded, what he could see and hear, how he interacted with the world—and from there, a plan was built just for him. In his sessions with trained educators, Ganesh was gently introduced to structured activities that focused on communication, social interaction, and daily living skills. At first, progress came in small moments—brief eye contact, a response to a sound, a flicker of engagement. Then those moments began to grow. Sounds turned into vocalisations, and vocalisations into simple words. Ganesh started expressing himself, using one-word responses, and began to follow basic instructions. He showed interest in activities, responded to familiar routines, and slowly built confidence, even though he remained a little hesitant around music and unfamiliar environments.

At the same time, something equally powerful was happening at home. His mother became an active participant in his journey, attending training sessions and consistently practicing what she learned every day with Ganesh. This continuity between the centre and home made all the difference. Learning was no longer confined to a classroom—it became part of his everyday life. Slowly, the child who once remained withdrawn began to open up. He became more responsive, more curious, more connected.

Today, Ganesh is no longer on the sidelines of his own world. He communicates using simple verbal cues, expresses his needs and understands what is being asked of him. He participates in activities, engages with others and shows a growing sense of independence in daily tasks. These may seem like small steps, but for Ganesh and his family, they are life changing. His parents see not just progress, but possibility. They remain deeply involved in his journey and dream of a future where he continues to grow—where he can communicate more confidently, become increasingly independent and be included in school and community life.

Ganesh’s story is a reminder that meaningful change doesn’t always come in big, dramatic moments. Sometimes, it begins quietly—with the right support, at the right time, and a family that refuses to give up. And from there, step by step, a child begins to find his voice, his confidence and his place in the world.
