In this handbook Sense International India has attempted to provide information related to deafblindness and the unique features of individuals with deafblindness, along with the implications it has on various areas of development and strategies to facilitate learning. The goal of this book is to help professionals from the field of education, rehabilitation and health care gain better understanding and to explore the rationale of assessments and challenges associated with the clinical and functional considerations for individuals with deafblindness. The principal purpose behind developing this handbook is to increase the interest among educators for taking up challenges and initiatives towards working with deafblind individuals. This handbook will help them to plan their strategies for working with deafblind children and adapt the curriculum leading to overall development. It also discusses the need for transitioning and readiness for vocational life of an adolescent deafblind. In general this book is an attempt to explore all aspects of a deafblind individual's life.
Handbook on Curriculum Adaptation for Inclusive Education of Students with Deafblindness
The handbook aims to enable teachers to adapt and modify classroom curriculum as per the needs and abilities of children with deafblindness. It would also increase the number of regular teachers in mainstream schools to work effectively with children with deafblindness. Through this adapted curriculum, Sense International India aims to provide quality education to children with deafblindness and MSI, which will enable them to learn effectively and participate equally in the class. It will also maintain the dignity and build their confidence to learn. Further it will build the capacity of mainstream teachers and schools as well, to enhance their level of understanding and skills. This handbook for the teachers in the school open doors of knowledge for persons with Deafblindness and MSI and support them in motivating to make needs based adaptation for students in the classroom.
Play (Hindi)
For Children with Deafblindness and Multiple Disabilities. It is very much important to know the residual vision and hearing ability of the children with deafblindness, which can be used to encourage them in learning. The best mode to build rapport with children is through play. Play has very vital role in life. Children get opportunity to communicate, search, experiment and repeat through the mode of play. This helps in overall development of children. But it is a complex process to begin play with children with deafblindness. Taking all these facts into consideration, this booklet is made. This booklet is especially useful for educators, parents and CBR workers who are or will be working with children in age group of 0-6 years old. With the help of this booklet, children can learn his daily skills through different play activities. This booklet will help to work more effectively in developing rapport with children.

Hence an assessment tool based on the curriculum has become an immediate necessity. A curriculum based functional assessment checklist is not available in Indian condition. Under this situation, a book is designed to develop such checklist targeting individuals of early intervention and functional academic groups studying in institutes of deafblindness in India. The pictorial illustration in book will help families and teachers of children with deafblindness to provide basic need based support to children with deafblindness having the associated condition of Cerebral Palsy. Children with deafblindness and Cerebral Palsy may also have problems with oral motor control and feeding. They can be defensive to certain textures of food. Their other self - care skills can also be affected because of the combination of deafblindness and Cerebral Palsy. This booklet gives activities to improve self- help skills, feeding and also activities to reduce drooling. Since each child is different, the reader will have to modify the activities given based on individual child needs and skills even though the techniques remain the same. Toilet Training for children with Deafblindness and multi-sensory impairments. The booklet has been written to enable families, professionals and non-professionals to understand, how they can help their child with deafblindness in toilet training. The booklet is specially designed for teachers, who are giving services to children with deafblindness and MSI, their parents and caregivers, whose children are not getting any kind of special services and remain at home because of the lack of opportunity for formal training. Toilet training is very important area for a child to develop his independence and dignity and this will teach the child about the importance of staying hygienic, clean and dry. Toilet training requires intensive commitment of time and attention from those working with a child.

This booklet will help the professionals, parents, persons with deafblindness and all those people who are associated with persons with deafblindness to associate the incidental learning with the disability. This will help them to understand the situation more easily and face the incident without any panic and would be able to address the needs of that particular child at that particular time or situation. The major purpose of this booklet is to inculcate an understanding and mind set for self – learning and to provide alternative solutions to common situations and challenges. This book will provide a body of knowledge that will help educators, professionals, para-professionals, parents and also those people who are not very aware about deafblindness needs but are always willing to help and support them. This will help to understand the inherent needs and identify alternative options at a given situation that present themselves itself during an interaction with children or persons with deafblindness.
Project 1 - Help Educate 250 Deafblind Children in India
Deafblind children have limited access to basic services like education, health and training in India. Sense India is the first national NGO working exclusively for deafblind children in India. Through this project, 500 deafblind children will be provided with education and assistive devices to help them to be independent. Apart from deafblind children, their families will benefit through training and counselling about this rare disability and helping them collectively live a fulfilling life.
Project 2 - Sustainable Livelihoods for Deafblind Adults
The project will support 125 deafblind adults to start and sustain micro-enterprises. They will be provided training and capacity building in areas of entrepreneurship development, business development, marketing, financial management, communication skills etc. for successful growth of their income generation activities. They would be involved in trades such as agriculture and farming, dairy, animal husbandry, grocery shops, book shops, manufacturing - bags, jewelry, soaps.
