A student with Deafblindness exploring musical instruments

Athrav

Opening New Worlds, One Step at a Time

In a modest home in Navi Mumbai, Athrav’s world began quietly. Born with deafblindness, his earliest years were spent within the comfort and safety of his family, but with very little exposure to the world beyond. His father, an auto driver, worked long hours to support the family, while his mother devoted her days to caring for Athrav and his younger sibling. Love was constant, but access to the right support was not. Without awareness or specialised services within reach, Athrav grew up with limited opportunities to explore, communicate, or learn in structured ways.

He depended heavily on others for movement and daily activities, often hesitant in unfamiliar environments and unsure of how to engage with people around him. His world, though full of care, remained small. That began to change on 1st June 2025, when Athrav enrolled in the Sparsh Programme by Sense International India, after his family connected with other parents who had walked a similar path. What followed was not an instant transformation, but a gentle and steady unfolding of possibilities. Through careful assessments, his educators began to understand how Athrav experienced the world—how he responded, how he moved, how he could begin to connect. With this understanding came structured, consistent support tailored just for him.

In his sessions, Athrav was introduced to a new way of learning—through touch, movement, and guided interaction. At first, his responses were small but meaningful. He began to notice, to react, to engage. Slowly, he started responding to tactile and verbal cues, learning to follow simple instructions with support. His educators encouraged him to express his needs using gestures and objects, giving him tools to communicate in ways that made sense to him. Everyday activities became opportunities for growth—learning to feed himself, understanding simple concepts like big and small, up and down, in and out. What stood out was his natural curiosity. Athrav showed a deep interest in tactile play and exploratory activities, and through these, he began to connect more with his surroundings.

But the real strength of his journey lay in the consistency between the centre and his home. His mother became an active partner in every step forward—learning alongside him, practicing with him, and gently encouraging him to try things on his own. What he experienced during his sessions did not end there; it continued at home, woven into daily routines with patience and care. This continuity helped Athrav feel secure, allowing him to build confidence at his own pace.

Today, Athrav’s world looks very different. He communicates using gestures, facial expressions, and vocal sounds—finding ways to express what he needs and how he feels. He moves with greater confidence, no longer as dependent as before, and actively participates in play and learning activities. The hesitation that once held him back has slowly made way for curiosity and willingness. He is trying, exploring, and engaging—with people, with activities, and with the world around him.

His parents see this change not just in milestones, but in moments—in the way he reaches out, the way he responds, the way he participates. There is a visible shift in his confidence, his independence, and his joy in learning. With continued support from his educators and the unwavering involvement of his family, Athrav is steadily moving towards a future where he can do more on his own, communicate more clearly, and take part in everyday life with confidence.

Athrav’s story is a quiet but powerful reminder that when a child is given the chance to explore, to be understood, and to learn in ways that work for them, their world begins to grow. And in that growing world, step by step, they begin to find not just independence—but a sense of belonging.
